Capture a Payment

Overview

Capturing a payment is a crucial step in the payment process, allowing that authorized payments are finalised and ensuring that funds are transferred from the customer's account.

Please note that Ryft allows for Authorized payments to be partially captured. This means that you can choose to capture only a portion of the authorized amount, with the remaining balance still available for future capture. This feature provides flexibility in managing payments, especially in scenarios where the full amount may not be required immediately.

For all payments routed under the Main Account holder, and therefore of type Single Payment, or Recurring Payments and Unscheduled Payments without a Sub-Account involved, Main Account holders have the ability to capture payments using either the Ryft Dashboard or the Ryft API.

For any other payment types and payments involving Sub-Accounts, capturing can only be done through the Ryft API via the paymentsessioncapturebyid endpoint.

Prerequisites

A payment can only be captured if it has been authorized but not yet settled. Payments that have been authorized but not yet captured will typically have a status of Approved in the Payment Session, and will show as Not Captured in the Ryft Portal.

For more information on how to initiate an authorise-only payment, please refer to the Authorise Payments section.

Capturing via the Ryft Portal

To capture a payment using the Ryft Portal, you can select the payment you wish to capture from the list of payments under the Payments page. If the payment is in a Not Captured state and therefore eligible for capturing, you will see a Capture Payment button available.

Clicking this button will bring you to a screen where you can specify the amount you wish to capture. If you want to capture the full authorized amount, you can immediately click the Capture Payment button, as the full amount will be pre-filled for you.

If you wish to capture a partial amount, you can enter the desired amount in the provided field and then click the Capture Payment button.

Considerations

Please note that when capturing a payment, the following considerations apply:

  • Authorized payments can only be captured by the Main Account holder. Sub-accounts do not have the capability to capture payments.
  • Once a payment has been successfully captured, its status will be updated to Captured, and the funds will be transferred from the customer's account. If partially captured, the remaining balance will still be available for future capture or automatically voided based on the authorization validity period.
  • The timeframe for capturing a payment may vary depending on the payment method and the policies of the acquiring bank. Please refer to the Authorization Validity section for more information on authorization timeframes.
